Chemservice prepares an Industry Risk Management Option Analysis for PVC Additives

We are pleased to announce that Chemservice has recently completed an Industry Risk Management Option Analysis (i-RMOA) for VinylPlus®. The i-RMOA was conducted on key additives used in the production of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This comprehensive study focused on two critical groups of substances: organotin stabilisers and ortho-phthalate plasticisers. These additives play essential roles in the processing and performance of PVC, one of the most widely used plastics in construction, packaging, and other applications.

The i-RMOA was commissioned by VinylPlus®, the voluntary sustainable development programme of the European PVC industry, in anticipation of potential regulatory developments at the European level. This strategic move follows recent recommendations by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), which, in its 2023 investigation report, suggested that certain additives used in PVC production could be subject to further regulatory scrutiny.

With a focus on proactive risk management, the analysis conducted by Chemservice assesses the potential environmental and human health impacts of the substances in question, while also evaluating the technical feasibility of alternatives and the socio-economic implications of potential regulatory actions. The i-RMOA is designed to support informed decision-making by industry stakeholders and policymakers by presenting a comprehensive overview of current use patterns, existing regulatory frameworks, and possible future measures.

The findings aim to help VinylPlus® and its partners prepare for evolving regulatory landscapes, while maintaining a commitment to sustainable innovation, product stewardship, and alignment with the EU’s chemicals strategy for sustainability.
